Frequently Asked Questions | Kangaroo Route

We recreate the historic Kangaroo Route aboard our privately chartered Qantas Airbus A330-300. Following an almost identical flight path as the one Qantas first wholly operated in 1947, ours is a journey born of nostalgia, yet one enhanced by the conveniences of the modern era. We’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions below.

First operated wholly by Qantas in 1947, the Kangaroo Route refers to the flight path historically taken from Sydney to London. The route made stops in several cities along the way, owing to aircraft limitations, with 29 passengers and 10 staff on board. Utilising Lockheed Constellation planes, a number of other airlines operated specific sectors of the journey before Qantas became the first to fly the entire route in its own right.
An itinerary based around the Kangaroo Route is something that Captain’s Choice has wanted to offer its guests for many years. With the first-ever Captain’s Choice journey being a Qantas private charter in 1994 – and with many more having been completed since then – we thought it fitting to honour the legacy of this historic route alongside the airline that put it on the map.
Our journey will take place aboard a privately chartered Qantas Airbus A330-300, with no more than 186 guests. Not all seats in the main cabin will be sold to allow more room to spread out.
The main cabin configuration is 2 seats | 4 seats | 2 seats. Only two of the middle seats will be sold to allow more room to spread out. All guests will receive an aisle or window seat for each sector.

In addition, Business Class catering will be enjoyed throughout the aircraft, regardless of seating category.

There are a limited number of Business Class seats also available.
Yes, Qantas Frequent Flyer points will be credited to all guests on this journey. The number of points is still being finalised and will be shared before departure.
Seats will be allocated by Captain’s Choice prior to departure. Throughout the journey, guests will be rotated to ensure that everyone has comparable time allocated to both window and aisle seating.
We will be divided into smaller groups during our explorations of each city. All touring days will also offer an array of optional Your World experiences, allowing you to tailor your journey from a number of included experiences. Your World experiences will be selected prior to you joining the journey, with some having limited places available. Aside from our gala dinners, each day’s dining will also take place in smaller groups.
The Captain’s Choice Tour Host Team will be comprised of 10 staff, including a Tour Manager, a Tour Doctor and several Tour Hosts. The plane will be manned by 12 Qantas staff, including Captains, cabin crew, an engineer and catering staff. Special guests will join us throughout the tour, including former Qantas pilots. All touring will be escorted by expert local guides.
