Marree Man and Lake Eyre Flyovers

We fly over the mysterious Marree Man, viewed best from the air, and the vast beauty of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Nature will dictate whether the latter will be in flood, though the views of Australia’s largest river basin impress regardless.

Our luggage is light, and so are our spirits, as we board our private aircraft and set off for a weekend sojourn. Touching down in Broken Hill, we discover what makes this frontier town’s heart tick with visits to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Line of Lode Lookout and Miners Memorial, and the Silver City Mint. The magical light of Broken Hill has long been a beacon for artists and we get a taste of its cultural leanings during lunch at The Big Picture, a gallery housing the world’s largest acrylic painting. We take to the skies once more, flying over the mysterious Marree Man figure before landing in Coober Pedy. Here we’re granted entrée to the town’s subterranean lifestyle, with visits to places of work and worship, before toasting our return to the surface with a sunset drink at Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park. Back underground, an exclusive dinner is served at Opal Quest Mine, before we bed down at the Desert Cave Hotel.

Bidding adieu to the world’s opal mining capital, we once again board our private aircraft and ponder the magnitude of Australia’s largest salt lake from above. If in flood, the area will be teeming with life, but if not, the overview of the ancient desert river basin is equally wondrous. Continuing across outback skies, we touch down in Birdsville and make our way to the iconic Birdsville Hotel, where the locals fire up the barbecue in welcome. Following a relaxed lunch, and an accompanying beer or two, we farewell our new-found friends and prepare for our journey home.
