From the majesty of the Taj Mahal to the meditative waterways of Kerala to the blindingly colourful ghats of the Ganges, India is a living contradiction. It is a place both holy and profane, with hundreds of languages and vastly different regions.

Itinerary

We check in to the palatial Vivanta by Taj Malabar. The next day, discover relics of Kochi's past, including the Paradesi Synagogue, the Dutch Palace and St Francis Church. After, visit Kochi's famous Chinese fishing nets, partake in a cooking class, or visit Jew Town. A kathakali performance awaits us at Bolgatty Palace this evening. Kerala is said to translate as 'land of coconuts', and as we are gently carried down its canals and lakes in a private houseboat, we only need to look towards shore to see why. The morning turns smoothly into lunch and in the afternoon, we continue lazily down the waterways, passing villages, old temples, and rural churches, stopping when we choose. Tonight dine in any of our hotel's restaurants or at Trilogi Restaurant, named for the three regions of Kerala represented on the menu.

Boarding our private jet, we fly north to Goa. On arrival, we are driven to Taj Exotica, set on Benaulim beach. In the evening, choose from one of our resort's excellent restaurants. As a premier city in the Portuguese empire, Goa was lavished with grand cathedrals. This morning we visit two. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is a Baroque-style building that contains the body of St Francis Xavier, the Jesuit famed for evangelising as far as Japan. Close by, the sprawling Sé Catedral was built to commemorate the 1510 Portuguese victory over Muslim armies. In between churches, we taste Portuguese 'pao' bread, fresh from the local bakery's oven. Later, choose from a visit to an ancestral home of a local family who served as village heads for generations until Goa joined the Indian Republic in 1961. Or perhaps scour local markets and antique shops with a personal shopper, join a yoga class, or meet an Ayurvedic expert for a consultation.

Our morning flight sees us heading into the heart of northern India to beautiful Udaipur and the incredible Taj Lake Palace. Devoting ourselves the next day to the city's awe-inspiring architecture, we see the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles of the City Palace. We continue to Saheliyon-ki-Bari, a formal garden with lotus ponds, marble pavilions and elephant-shaped fountains. Before sunset, you may choose to take a boat across Lake Pichola to see Jag Mandir palace in the golden hue of the evening sun.

We depart for Jaipur and check in to the Taj Rambagh Palace, our home for the next three nights. Greet the morning with a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Amber Fort, or join us later for an exploration of the fort on foot. Later, you may like to take a cycle rickshaw ride to the city's old bazaars, or enjoy a personal shopper experience focussing on the famed crafts of the region, such as zardozi embroidered textiles, Gota fabrics, ornamental silver and precious stonework. Alternatively, learn the skills of a painter of the royal court with a painting lesson at a Rajput school of art. This evening, a Rajasthani royal banquet awaits. Celebrate with a traditional dance on a floor covered in fragrant rose petals. The next day we further immerse ourselves in the lives of the maharajas with a morning tour that takes in Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and the City Palace.

Landing in Agra, we head to the Oberoi Amarvilas, our hotel that boasts unobstructed views of the Taj Mahal. With an evening at leisure, perhaps visit the monument during the full moon, let us arrange a romantic dinner for you, or savour cuisine of the Northwest Frontier. The following morning, the Taj Mahal beckons. We continue on to Agra Fort before visiting a marble workshop where artisans practise inlay techniques that have been used since the Mughal days. Afterwards, you may choose from these Your World experiences. Marvel at Fatehpur Sikri, which blends a stunning fusion of Persian, Hindu and regional styles. Or allow a personal shopper to introduce you to the city's best crafts. Enjoy an al fresco gala overlooking the Taj Mahal, with magicians, tight rope walkers, wrestlers and henna painters who will dazzle us before our dinner.

We board our short flight to Varanasi and transfer to The Taj Gateway Hotel. Our first stop is Sarnath, where Buddha reportedly delivered his first sermon. We then have the option of continuing to the iconic ghats of Varanasi. Wander through the winding alleyways and end with a private rooftop viewing of the day's aarti ceremony by devotees in the Ganges. After, we will board a boat, where we are rowed to the middle of the river for a front-row view of the spectacle. By dawn the next morning, the ghats of Varanasi are a different place. Only a handful of devout pilgrims are up at this hour, allowing us a clear view of the enchanting geometry of steps painted in vivid colours. We then continue to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple before jetting to Kolkata.

We arrive in Kolkata early in the afternoon and are driven to the five-star Oberoi Grand. Choose from a visit to the frenzied New Market, a gastronomic tour of local street food, a tour of the city with a photographer, or relax with a choice of spa therapies. The next day we embark on a privately chartered tram tour before exploring Kolkata's most magnificent colonial buildings on foot. Our last stop is Nirmal Hriday, a hospice founded by Mother Teresa, before we're treated to a sumptuous farewell dinner in the lush, palm-filled courtyard of our hotel. On our final morning in India, visit the Indian Museum or make a pilgrimage to Eden Garden Cricket Stadium. We return to our hotel and check out befor e reflecting on our journey over a final lunch before our journey concludes and we say our goodbyes.
