Tour Manager - Greg Fitzgerald
Melbourne (Australia), King Island, Kangaroo Island
As Your Tour Manager, Greg Fitzgerald Welcomes You On This Journey
This morning, we set off on our first private jet flight, departing Melbourne’s Essendon airport for King Island. While here, we explore Australia’s tallest lighthouse, at Cape Wickham, looking out to Bass Strait. We then enjoy the island’s fresh produce during lunch at Wild Harvest Restaurant. Our private jet then brings us to Kangaroo Island. While here, we stay two nights at stunning Southern Ocean Lodge. Acquaint yourself with the lodge’s breathtaking views and luxurious amenities, before savouring a delicious degustation with paired wines during our Welcome Dinner.
Kangaroo Island
After a sound sleep induced by the crashing of waves, our group becomes two and we join the first of two half-day tours.
Explore Cape du Couedic, whose red-domed lighthouse stands proud. Follow the boardwalk to Admiral’s Arch, a distinctive rock bridge formed over millennia by the battering of waves. From here, you may watch the local fur seal colony frolicking below. Nearby, you will find the Remarkable Rocks, giant boulders sculpted by 500 million years of rain, wind and waves.
At Seal Bay, get up close to Australia’s third largest colony of sea lions, which further substantiates the island’s reputation as ‘Australia’s Galápagos’. Accompanied by a guide, walk among the colony, courtesy of a dedicated boardwalk, and learn about the marine mammals’ breeding cycle, as well as the ongoing research programs conducted here.
Following lunch, our groups swap to enjoy their remaining half-day experience. You may prefer to remain at Southern Ocean Lodge to take advantage of its amenities and breathtaking clifftop setting. We reconvene for pre-dinner drinks and canapes. Then dine upon the freshest island produce and delectable desserts during a four-course affair at our lodge’s restaurant.
Coober Pedy
Today’s flight takes us deep into South Australia. Enjoy lunch on board our jet before arriving in the opal mining capital of the world, Coober Pedy. Take the afternoon at leisure in this remote frontier town, before toasting our glorious surroundings with a sunset drink at Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park. We’re then welcomed to the Desert Cave Hotel, where this evening’s dinner is served below ground.
Coober Pedy, Kalgoorlie
This morning, we’re introduced to more of the town’s subterranean lifestyle during a visit to the Serbian Orthodox Church. The walls of this impressive underground building bear the likenesses of saints carved in stone. While its exquisitely excavated ceiling and stained-glass windows are breathtaking in their beauty. Then marvel at the town’s grassless golf course. Incredibly, it is the world’s only club which boasts reciprocal playing rights with the revered St Andrews in Scotland. Finally, we delve further into the fascinating history of Coober Pedy while exploring the Umoona Opal Mine and Museum.
We fly west this afternoon, our sights set on Kalgoorlie. Enjoy lunch aboard our jet, before touching down to explore this quintessential outback town. A drive brings us to the Super Pit. From a lookout, the mine’s vast terraces dominate our field of vision. We spend tonight at The Plaza Hotel, enjoying dinner there or at a local restaurant.
Kalgoorlie, Busselton, Yallingup
Following breakfast at our hotel, we continue our explorations of Kalgoorlie. The gold mining town introduces us to some of its key sites, including Mt Charlotte, the Museum of the Goldfields, and Hannans North Tourist Mine, as well as the comparative oasis of Hammond Park.
Our jet then delivers us to Busselton. Here we board the famous solar-powered train to traverse the world’s second-longest wooden pier. The promise of award-winning wine then draws us farther west to the famed Margaret River region. In Yallingup, we meet the winemaker of Aravina Estate. The winery’s WA Surf Gallery provides an idealistic setting in which to partake of a tasting and light lunch. This evening, we dine and rest at Cape Lodge, a luxurious retreat tucked away upon lush grounds. Take in idyllic lake views from the deck while enjoying pre-dinner drinks, followed by a four-course dinner.
Margaret River, Yallingup
Today, choose from the following Your World experiences, which provide a glimpse into distinct parts of the region:
— Go behind the scenes at Cape Mentelle Winery, savouring a wine tasting and lunch in the barrel room of this renowned producer. Afterwards, head to Vasse Virgin for an overview of their food and beauty products created from olives and native botanicals.
— Set off on a 3.5 km guided walk along the stunning Cape to Cape track. Begin at Cape Naturaliste, heading south to admire Sugarloaf Rock. Brief discoveries of Wilyabrup, Yallingup and Dunsborough, as well as the coastal wonders of Canal Rocks, also follow. After another winery visit, we enjoy lunch at Leeuwin Estate, with a final stop at Vasse Virgin.
You may prefer to remain at Cape Lodge, enjoying the tranquil setting and amenities of the property. This evening, we dine at the renowned winery, Vasse Felix.
Margaret River, Yallingup
Following breakfast this morning, Your World experiences are once again on offer:
— Should you not have done so yesterday, our Cape Mentelle Winery experience is available again today.
— Venture south to see the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. Visit the nearby coastal town of Augusta, where you will enjoy morning tea with river views. Stop in at Hamelin Bay Winery, before having lunch at the delightfully rustic Glenarty Road Farm Winery. Keep watch for stingrays at Hamelin Bay Beach before returning north.
As always, you are also welcome to remain at Cape Lodge today. Following pre-dinner drinks along the deck this evening, our lodge’s chef hosts us for a delicious barbecue of local produce.
Busselton, Exmouth
After transferring to Busselton’s airport, we meet back up with our private jet. Our captain flies us due north to Exmouth, along the gleaming Coral Coast. On arrival, we board a glass-bottom boat to discover an underwater world of tropical fish and coral along Ningaloo Reef. This evening, we make ourselves comfortable at Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, dining within its restaurant or at another local venue.
Broome, Cable Beach
Overlooking the idyllic waters of Roebuck Bay, Broome is today’s destination of choice. We touch down and head straight to Matso’s Brewery. The legendary local venue is set within a heritage-listed building and features a large veranda. Perhaps pair your meal with one of the brewery’s distinctive mango, ginger, or chilli and lime beers.
Refreshed and ready to explore, we set out for Cable Beach’s sanctuary to learn about the unconventional aristocrat and local personality, Lord McAlpine. At Gantheaume Point, we’re brought to the site of dinosaur footprints left 130 million years ago. At the Japanese Cemetery, we learn about the fortunes and fate of those who came to Broome to work in the lucrative pearling industry. While nearby, Town Beach presents its outdoor art installation commemorating the air raid on Broome during World War II. Following a walk around Chinatown, we head to our accommodation, Kimberley Sands Resort, where we enjoy dinner this evening.
Broome, Cable Beach
After breakfast at our hotel, set out on a Your World experience:
— Join Robert Dann for an insight into Broome’s unique cultural mix, including its ancient Indigenous culture. Learn about the region’s Aboriginal and pearling history, sample some bush tucker, and enjoy a didgeridoo performance.
— Alternatively, head out of town to Willie Creek Pearl Farm, where you will gain a greater appreciation for the impact the pearling industry has had on the region and its people.
This evening, we select from the town’s local restaurants for dinner.
Darwin
Our coastal adventures continue today as we reach Darwin. On arrival, we check into the Hilton Darwin before taking the rest of the afternoon at leisure. We reconvene for dinner this evening at Pee Wee’s at the Point, enjoying its striking waterfront location.
Darwin
We are called inland today, choosing from the following Your World experiences:
— Visit Litchfield National Park. See its giant termite mounds and lush monsoon forests. At Florence and Wangi falls, scenic walks and quiet swimming holes make for a tranquil experience.
— Alternatively, head to Kakadu National Park. Within its sprawling wilderness, you will discover rock art which has been here for many thousands of years. During a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong, look out for saltwater crocodiles.
This evening, we dine at our hotel’s restaurant.
Uluru
From Darwin, our captain charts a course due south, delivering us to the country’s heart. We check into the outback oasis, Sails in the Desert. Enjoy an Asian banquet lunch at our resort’s Ilkari Restaurant. Tonight, we are guests at the recently launched Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner. We begin with a delicious cocktail infused with native ingredients. A gourmet dinner, also celebrating native ingredients, is paired with premium Australian wines. As darkness descends, Anangu culture is spectacularly revealed through a series of choreographed drones, lasers and projections.
Uluru
Before the heat of the day sets in, spend the morning on a spectacular discovery of Uluru. Beginning at the base of the colossal rock, we take the Mala walk to Kantju Gorge. The ensuing Kuniya walk then brings us to the Mutitjulu Waterhole, before we are driven around Uluru and back to our hotel for lunch. Today’s lunch takes place at Arnguli Grill & Restaurant. You may choose to learn about dot painting at the Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre this afternoon.
Later this evening, we sample canapes and sparkling wine before sitting down to an exquisite meal during the renowned Field of Light dinner. The space around Uluru gradually illuminates, courtesy of thousands of tiny, coloured globes, while the sounds of a didgeridoo firmly ground us in this magical outback setting. Afterwards, our host directs our eyes toward the night sky and reveals the relationship between the various stars, planets and galaxies before a perfectly clear sky.
Longreach
We fly east this morning, our private jet soaring over the border into Queensland. On arrival in Longreach, we celebrate our journey during lunch at the Qantas Founders Museum. Then dive into the history of the airline while admiring its historic collection of planes. Our home this evening is Saltbush Retreat, a rustic sanctuary that salutes the outback way of life. After checking into our accommodation, we board a boat and head out on the Thomson River for a sunset cruise. As the sun’s rays disappear over the horizon, our vessel docks and we settle in at Smithy’s Outback Dinner & Show, exclusive to our group. While enjoying dinner under the stars, we are entertained by an evening of song, dance and the occasional bush yarn.
Melbourne
After enjoying the bounty of goods from within our gourmet breakfast hamper at Saltbush Retreat, we transfer to the airport for our return flight home. Lunch is served on board before we touch down in Melbourne early this afternoon.
