Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
Your private transfer brings you to the iconic Copacabana Palace Hotel. This evening, meet your fellow guests and Tour Host Team during our Welcome Dinner at our hotel. For the next three nights, we relax within light-filled, Superior Partial Ocean View Rooms.
Rio de Janeiro
A short drive affords us the opportunity to appreciate the contrast of Rio’s beaches and rainforest. In the foothills of the Tijuca National Forest, we find the neighbourhood of Cosme Velho. It is from here that we board a cogwheel train for our ascent of Corcovado Mountain to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer up close. Afterwards, we get into the spirit of Carnival, joining locals at one of the event’s organised street parties, complete with vivid displays of colour, music and dance. We then retreat to the waterfront restaurant Assador, as renowned for its striking interiors and enviable bay views as it is its famed churrascaria.
Following an afternoon at leisure, we reconvene to witness the Samba School Winner’s Parade at Sambadrome. The purpose-built stadium showcases the performances of the year’s top six samba schools. This is one of Carnival’s most anticipated events and we enjoy it all from our front row seats.
Rio de Janeiro
Take the morning on your own schedule. Relax at our hotel, enjoy shopping in nearby Ipanema, or simply take advantage of our superb beachfront location. We come together for lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, a choice of Your World experiences beckon:
— Admire one of Brazil’s oldest neighbourhoods, Santa Teresa, then learn of the production methods of cachaça, Brazil’s popular alcoholic beverage.
— Visit the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, considered one of the ten most important ecological sanctuaries in the world. More than 6,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants can be found here.
As shadows begin to lengthen, we board a gondola to reach the peak of Sugarloaf Mountain. The spectacular views enjoyed from here expand our frame of reference for the region’s topography. This evening, choose your preferred dining venue from a selection of Rio’s finest restaurants
Iguassu Falls
Following breakfast and a leisurely morning, we transfer to the airport for a scheduled economy class flight to Iguassu Falls. We stay tonight at Belmond’s Das Cataratas Hotel, enjoying unparalleled views of the falls. Late this afternoon, we set out from our accommodation on foot to take in the enchanting ambience of the rainforest. Making our way down the canyon along a trail, we soon arrive near the base of the falls. A glass elevator then sends us up to a viewing platform adjacent to the crest of the cliff. From here, we enjoy unmatched views of the unrelenting deluge. Few places on Earth will ever command our attention quite like Iguassu Falls. This raw display of power inspires a hunger, which we satiate at our hotel’s restaurant this evening.
Iguassu Falls, Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Make the most of our brief time at Iguassu Falls by joining one of the following Your World experiences:
— Fly over the falls in a helicopter for a truly unique view of the ‘Devil’s Throat’.
— Getting soaked is all part of the fun as you explore the falls aboard a Macuco Safari Boat. Travel across the rapids and up close to the base of the falls.
— Pay a visit to Parque das Aves, the Iguazú Falls Bird Park. It isn’t every day you get
up close to a toucan. As well as the many colourful topical birds in the park’s giant aviaries, you’ll have the chance to see turtles, iguanas, boa constrictors, and innumerable species of native butterflies.
Enjoy lunch at our hotel before we transfer to the airport on the Argentine side of the border. The scheduled economy class flight soon sees us landing in Buenos Aires. We immediately set out on a walking tour of the Recoleta neighbourhood, whose elegant boulevards and leafy parks lend it an almost Parisian air. Along Alvear Avenue, we see the famed facades of the Brazilian and French embassies. At the Recoleta Cemetery, we walk among row after row of grand and imposing monuments commemorating many of the city’s most famous, wealthy and powerful citizens. During the first of three nights at the Palacio Duhau, we enjoy the gastronomy of its stylish restaurant.
Buenos Aires
The day begins with a southerly drive into Argentina’s Pampas region. Here we are welcomed to Estancia La Bandada, a working farm occupying an enviable tract of grass-covered land. We spend the morning here engaged in our chosen activity: Explore the property on horseback, by foot, or during a bike ride. Identify some of the many resident and migratory bird species or simply lounge by the pool. Having worked up an appetite, we sit down to a lunch of traditional Argentine fare before making our return to Buenos Aires. A selection of the city’s finest restaurants, including our hotel’s own, is available for you to choose from this evening.
Buenos Aires
Absorb the artistic expression evident within this passionate city during a choice of Your World experiences:
— Begin at Plaza de Mayo, the city’s oldest public square. History is further revealed within the various rooms of El Zanjón. The successive brick archways of the restored mansion beckon you onward to view art and artefacts detailing the storied past of Buenos Aires. Nearby, the exquisite craftsmanship of Marcelo Toledo is revealed at his silversmithing workshop.
— You may instead choose to enjoy your morning at leisure before setting off for an Evita tour. Delve into the life of Eva Peron, Argentina’s revered politician, actress and activist. Acquaint yourself with Eva’s background during visits to her former home and places of work. See Casa Rosada, from whose balcony she addressed a crowd of workers within Plaza de Mayo. Conclude with visits to the Evita Museum and see her tomb at Recoleta Cemetery.
This evening, we celebrate dance in its most spectacular form with dinner and a live show at Rojo Tango, an intimate cabaret room where dancers weave their way between the venue’s tables. We then enjoy a final evening at Palacio Duhau.
La Paz (Bolivia)
Transferring to the airport this morning, we board a flight for Bolivia. A brief layover in Santa Cruz de la Sierra sees us arriving in the capital, La Paz, by early evening. With the Andes at our doorstep, breathtaking views are par for the course in this high-altitude city. We enjoy dinner at our hotel, the Casa Grande, this evening, and acquaint ourselves with our new surroundings.
La Paz
Following breakfast at our hotel, we head out to explore. A cultural cauldron is evident as we take in the Indian and Witches markets. From here, we travel to Moon Valley, whose colossal clay and sandstone formations, formed over millions of years, mesmerise us. We stop for lunch at El Vagon del Sur, the Southern Wagon. This afternoon, we wander along Calle Jaén, the city’s Spanish-colonial thoroughfare, absorbing the brilliant hues of its building’s facades. Stop in at each of the street’s four museums: the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Pre-Columbian Precious Metals Museum, Murillo House, and the Costumbrista Museum. Choose to dine this evening at either the renowned restaurant, Gustu, or at our hotel.
Lake Titicaca, Puno (Peru)
We set out for Lake Titicaca this morning, our ultimate destination the Peruvian city of Puno. Along the way, we stop for several cultural encounters, including at the Andean Roots Eco Village, the Altiplano Museum, and the Handicrafts Village. See the mud igloos and mortuary towers of the indigenous Uru-Chipaya people. We then meet members of the Limachi family, who built two vessels for the renowned adventurer Thor Heyerdahl in the 1970s. The specially constructed boats, RA II and Tigris, were fashioned from reeds and took the Norwegian on his respective expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean and the Arabian Sea.
We then board a hydrofoil for the short cruise to Moon Island. Here we see the ancient, well-preserved Virgins of the Sun Temple. On neighbouring Sun Island, we also admire the Inca Grand Stairs and the Sacred Fountain. Extraordinary lake views are enjoyed during our clifftop al fresco lunch at Uma Kollu Archaeological Restaurant. After visiting a couple of local markets and a shrine, we make the return trip by hydrofoil.
Crossing the border by road into Peru, we soon arrive at our waterfront lodge, Titilaka Hotel, which hosts us for dinner tonight.
Puno, Embark Belmond Andean Explorer
After breakfast, we witness the floating homes of the Uros Islands. Occupied by a small tribe, these compact dwellings are built from the reeds of the totora plant. We return to our hotel for lunch, before departing Puno aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer. Welcomed on board with cocktails and canapes, we acquaint ourselves with the train and its amenities before gathering for dinner. We then bed down in comfortable cabins, decorated with Peruvian-styled furnishings.
Raqchi, Cusco, Disembark Belmond Andean Explorer
Alight the train to visit the archaeological site of Raqchi, dedicated to the Inca god Wiracocha. The extensive walls and temples here were composed of stone and mud brick during the 15th century. We return to the train and continue to Cusco, enjoying brunch on board. On arrival in Cusco, we set out on foot to explore its legendary ruins. Begin at the city’s cathedral, with art by Quechua artists of the 17th-century Cusco Painting School. From here, we continue to Koricancha, an ancient Inca shrine dedicated to the worship of the sun. During the first evening of our three-night stay at Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, we enjoy the creations of its fine-dining restaurant.
Cusco
Leave the city centre for an exploration of Sacsayhuaman, a hilltop fortress overlooking Cusco. Like Machu Picchu, it was built of stone blocks, though much bigger ones than those used there. The scene of today’s lunch is Hacienda Sarapampa. The ancient Peruvians held the distinction of developing the largest corn the world had ever known. Our hosts convey the importance of this staple to the local economy and invite us to enjoy a nourishing lunch of organic produce grown right on the property. Our afternoon is dedicated to discoveries of Peruvian pastimes. Enjoy close-up encounters with Peruvian paso horses, celebrated for their smooth gait and elegant features. We then savour the pleasures of pisco. A tasting of Peru’s national spirit reveals a range of diverse flavours and aromas. Dinner is served at one of Cusco’s remarkable restaurants.
Machu Picchu, Cusco
Today, we prepare for our arrival at Machu Picchu. As is custom, we travel there in style, aboard the opulent Hiram Bingham train. Relax and enjoy lunch on board. The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu were constructed from hand-cut stones, each a perfect fit with its adjoining counterpart without the need for mortar. During our time at this extraordinary site, we observe its various components, including the Citadel, Main Plaza, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Royal Tomb. The Hiram Bingham train transports us back to Cusco while we enjoy some exemplary local dishes in the elegant dining car.
Puerto Maldonado, Amazon Rainforest
From Cusco’s airport, we join a short flight to Puerto Maldonado. It is from here that we begin our Amazon adventure. Carried along the waters of the Madre de Dios River by motorboat, we soon reach our luxury eco-lodge, the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. We’re shown to our comfortable cabins, the flourishing rainforest practically within reach. Following lunch, we join our chosen afternoon activity. Explore the biodiversity of the Amazon basin, walking beneath a canopy of towering trees while listening for bird calls. You may even catch sight of the odd monkey or sloth in the trees above. During a twilight river cruise, attune your eyes to a world of owls and nightjars. Capybaras and caimans may also be seen lying low along the banks of the river.
Our lodge hosts us for dinner, with Amazon-inspired dishes accompanied by cocktails. We drift off to sleep, soothed by the sounds of the rainforest.
Amazon Rainforest
With a full day in the Amazon to take advantage of, perhaps rise with the sun for an early breakfast. Lake Sandoval, within the protected Tambopata National Reserve, invites us to discover its resident wildlife. Aboard a dugout canoe, we glide along serene waters, keeping watch for endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, side-neck turtles, and red-bellied macaws. We refuel during lunch at our lodge, before heading off on another thrilling nature activity. Walk among the treetops as you traverse the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. Toucans, monkeys, woodpeckers, and multi-coloured trogons make their homes here. After making our descent, we continue along a wooden platform that crosses a swamp. This particular ecosystem may exhibit further fauna, including amphibians, bird species, and even anacondas.
Learn more about the local ecology during a nature presentation at our lodge’s Eco Centre. You may prefer to indulge in one of the many treatments available at the lodge’s spa. We reassemble for our final dinner at our rainforest lodge.
Puerto Maldonado, Lima
Make the most of our remaining time in this spectacular setting, delighting in the sights and sounds of native wildlife. Transferring back to Puerto Maldonado, we then join a flight to Lima. On arrival, we head to the Larco Museum. The venue’s Museo Larco Café Restaurant provides a relaxing atmosphere during lunch, with views of lush gardens. A tour of the museum takes us through 3,000 years of Pre-Columbian Peruvian history. After checking into our waterfront residence, the Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel, we take the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Our Farewell Dinner celebrates our grand journey and all that we have experienced during our time together.
Lima
Following breakfast at our hotel, we are transferred to Lima’s airport, where our grand journey concludes.
