In this verdant part of the world, every stone and brick comes with a legend attached. Ancient customs prevail, as do forests from the Ice Age. The Celts, Vikings and Romans all came and stayed, merging into a culture that is full of joie de vivre, and good stories that you can track back aboard the carriages of the Belmond Grand Hibernian and Belmond Royal Scotsman.

Traverse the Scottish Highlands Aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman

View the highlights of Scotland’s northwest from the refined yesteryear elegance of your luxury train. Scotland’s best-kept sights and secrets declare themselves at every turn along this magnificent rail journey.

Our journey links the countryside of Scotland and Ireland aboard the exquisite Belmond trains. After checking into The Merrion, a free afternoon presents itself. With cobbled streets meandering past red-brick Georgian homes and havens of green, it’s a joy to explore on foot. Gather for drinks at the hotel before a Welcome Reception.

Enjoy the city’s sights, including a stroll through the grounds of Trinity College. We then make our way to Heuston Station, where the Belmond Grand Hibernian welcomes us aboard. Alighting in Cork, explore the famed Jameson Distillery. After puckering up at the Blarney Stone, we continue to Killarney, to visit Ross Castle, set on the edge of Lough Leane. Musicians are then welcomed on board our train for a merry céilí.

In Galway, we lunch on oysters and champagne, then find a cosy nook at a local pub, learning to dance the traditional Irish jig and pulling the perfect pint of Guinness. Alternatively, take a trip to see the crashing waves of the North Atlantic from the Cliffs of Moher. At Ashford Castle, within Connemara National Park, we witness a skillful falconry demonstration.

We farewell our train in Dublin and drive to Malahide, enjoying a walk from the medieval castle along the harbour. We fly to Glasgow, and are whisked to the Cameron House Hotel at Loch Lomond. Choose to further venture to the Isle of Arran by ferry for a day heavy with discovery. Or discover Argyll, replete with wildlife such as golden eagles, red deer, otters and puffins. At Martin Wishart restaurant, we are treated to a Michelin-starred meal.

Arrive in Edinburgh to meet the Belmond Royal Scotsman for our journey through the Scottish Highlands, including the Kyle of Lochalsh, possibly the most scenic of railway routes in the British Isles. Close by, in Plockton, take a boat out on Loch Carron to see wild seals, experience a traditional Highland welcome at the Plockton Hotel, or see the Eilean Donan, a restored 13th-century castle on a tidal island with its own causeway.

At Ballindalloch Castle, choose to follow a private guide through the castle, play nine holes of golf on the castle’s own course, or go on an exclusive tour of the Ballindalloch Distillery. The Rothiemurchus Estate extends from the River Spey at Aviemore to the Cairngorm Summit Plateau. Try your hand at catching trout and pike, go clay pigeon shooting within the estate’s grounds, or take a tour of the estate and admire the scenery.

We disembark our train and take to Edinburgh’s streets, exploring the Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh Castle. At the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, we ascend the grand staircase into the Great Hall for a private dinner. Take in the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament buildings, before we come together one final time over dinner in a private room within our hotel, boasting views of Edinburgh Castle.
