Aboard a private charter of the Hebridean Sky, we skirt the shorelines of Portugal and Spain, as well as Morocco, and stop to soak up the culmination of centuries of art and culture. Seduced by the temperate climate, we venture further out to sea, savouring the beauty of Madeira’s archipelago. Our embrace of the remote and the idyllic then concludes amid the otherworldly landscapes of the Canary Islands.

Marrakesh Optional Overnight Stay

Following an exploration of the vivacious capital, Madrid, we are whisked directly to the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques. Here, we meet our fellow travellers over welcome cocktails and dinner.

Perhaps travel to the World Heritage-listed city of Toledo and learn how many Christians, Jews and Muslims all lived together in harmony here. Alternatively, pay a visit to Segovia, one of medieval Spain’s most important cities. Its famed aqueduct remains a marvel of Roman engineering. Afterwards, continue to soak up more of Madrid’s artistic and culinary riches.

A flight takes us to the city of La Coruña on the Galician coast. Forming part of the Rías Baixas wine region, it is a far less frequented Spanish locale and we take our time uncovering its hidden gems. Gazing out to the North Atlantic, the Tower of Hercules serves as La Coruña’s most distinguishing landmark. Afterwards, we board the Hebridean Sky, our purpose-built small ship, which we will call home for the next twelve nights.

We dock in the Port of Leixões and drive to the coastal city of Porto. Admire the gardens of Casa de Campo or enjoy a tasting at Quinta da Aveleda wine lodge in the Douro Valley. Hugging the Portuguese coast, we then cruise further south to Lisbon. Here, we stop in at a museum to absorb some of its extensive art and history. Choose to then visit the opulent Queluz National Palace or travel to Sintra and see the National Palace of Sintra.

We re-enter Spanish waters and arrive in Cádiz, one of Europe’s oldest settlements. Nestled within the region of Andalusia, this fascinating city is renowned for its 126 watchtowers. Admire the city’s waterfront castles, baroque-neoclassical cathedral and the famed Gran Teatro Falla. Alternatively, head for Seville, and immerse yourself in its succession of courtyards and narrow alleys, and enjoy the rhythms of its flamenco street performers.

Our ship crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and reaches the city of Tangier. Perhaps take the option to enjoy exclusive access to the Royal Palace in Tetouan. You may instead choose to enter the striking blue-walled city of Chefchaouen.

Marrakesh Optional Overnight Stay

Alternatively, take an optional overnight trip to Marrakesh. Here, admire the Koutoubia Mosque and take a walk to the ornate Bahaia Palace. Visit Villa Oasis, home of Yves Saint Laurent, or enjoy some of Marrakesh’s famed souks. Stay overnight at La Mamounia, then continue to the Majorelle Gardens and the YSL Museum by horse and carriage. Travel to Safi tomorrow to meet back up with our ship.

Options abound in exploring the thriving city of Casablanca. Visit the Hassan II Mosque and Ain Diab Resort. Travel to Rabat and gaze upon the Royal Palace and the ruins of Chellah Necropolis. Alternatively, take an optional trip to Marrakesh. Stay overnight at the opulent La Mamounia, then continue to the Majorelle Gardens and the YSL Museum by horse and carriage.

From Safi, head to the coastal town of Essaouira and see its striking combination of Portuguese and Berber architecture. You may prefer to explore Essaouira with renowned photographer Darren Lewey, who will take you to the old port battlements and introduce you to portrait photography. Enjoy informative lectures and entertainment on board the Hebridean Sky, as we chart a course along the North Atlantic for Madeira.

We reach the rarely visited island of Madeira and board a cable car to Monte, where we immerse ourselves in its alluring tropical gardens. Scan the waters off Madeira’s shores aboard RIB boats for pilot whales, as well as bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins. Relax aboard the Hebridean Sky during our day at sea, as we make our passage south over the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, with the Canary Islands in our sights.

Our ship arrives in Arrecife on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. At Puerto del Carmen, we climb aboard camels and ride to one of the peaks of Montañas del Fuego. For those preferring not to join the camel ride, choose to descend into the Jameos del Agua cave, where the local artist César Manrique utilised his architectural talents to highlight the beautiful surrounds. Alternatively, trek through the Valley of the Thousand Palms.

The island of Tenerife welcomes us, and its capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, provides several opportunities for immersion. Journey to the Canadas del Teide National Park, enjoy wine tastings in San Cristobal de La Laguna, or hike to Mt Teide for views of the surrounding area. Our ship then takes us to Gran Canaria, where we disembark. A flight takes us to Madrid, where we make ourselves comfortable at the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques.

Take the morning on your own schedule before we say goodbye to our fellow guests. Our minds flood with fond memories of time abandoned to these exotic shores.
