Let previously held notions of India drift away and embrace another side to the subcontinent as our train takes us down the Arabian Sea coast, before rounding the country’s tip and granting our exploration of the intoxicating south east. The Deccan Odyssey inspires notions of romance and royalty as we gather ourselves up in the more soothing aspects of India’s nature.

Arriving in Mumbai, we make our way to the luxurious Taj Mahal Palace. Houses of many a bright colour dazzle us as we commence our journey with a discovery of the neighbourhood of Asalpha. An architectural exploration or a friendly cricket match with Mumbai’s local cricket side then further acquaint us with Mumbai. Our group explores the renowned Elephanta Caves before we complete our immersion into Mumbai and board the Deccan Odyssey train.

Beside the Mandovi River, we admire the Basilica De Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral of Santa Catarina, before a steam train journey takes us up along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The diversity of Kochi’s heritage reveals itself through the Dutch Palace and Jewish Synagogue; giant Chinese fishing nets also capture our attention as we pass by the entrance to the harbor. At Fort Kochi, we’re treated to an authentic Kathakali dance performance.

Our train pulls into Trivandrum, where the Padmanabhaswamy Hindu Temple awaits us. At the southernmost point of India’s mainland, Kanyakumari, we find the temple dedicated to the Virgin Goddess whose name the town shares. At the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, we stand mesmerised by the spectacular ritual of an evening Aarti. Puducherry then beckons us along its tree-lined promenade before we savour our final dinner aboard the Deccan Odyssey.

In Chennai, we set out on an exploration of the city, which includes visits to Fort St George and the National Art Gallery. Our time here is enhanced with a stay at the beachfront Taj Fisherman’s Cove Resort & Spa. The coastal town of Mahabalipuram reveals its astonishing rock-cut temples and caves, before we savour our remaining time at our resort by relaxing within its lush garden setting or, perhaps, indulging in a spa treatment.

Taking to the skies, Hyderabad awaits us, as does the opulent Taj Falaknuma Palace, whose grand interiors showcase the regality of an earlier time. A short drive delivers us to Golconda Fort, an impressive example of engineering. We then stand before Charminar, the four-column landmark built in honour of Hyderabad’s founding. Afterwards, a Gala Farewell Dinner provides the opportunity for us to say goodbye to our fellow travellers.

Take a final opportunity to soak up India’s charms at the Salarjung Museum and wander through its 37 galleries. Follow this up with a visit to Hyderabad’s amazing spice market.
