Historic Norfolk Island

Travel back through history to the early days of Norfolk Island to uncover how the early settlement has had a hand in shaping the Norfolk Island of today. From the 13th-century Polynesian seafarers, to early settlement of the British in 1788 and the infamous Bounty mutineers in 1856, the island has a fascinating and multi-layered history.

This journey touches remote parts of Australia.
While we always select the best available accommodation, some properties may not be to the same standard as city accommodation.

Our Business Class private jet is bound for the lush island paradise of Norfolk Island. Upon touching down, we immediately become acquainted with our surrounds with a tour led by a local guide. We continue to St Barnabas Chapel, a picturesque church built in the 1880s. Our Welcome Dinner is held at the Homestead restaurant, where a farm-to-table philosophy is embraced. This exclusive private dinner has us feasting on meals crafted using local ingredients and cooked over an open fire. We retire to South Pacific Resort Hotel, our accommodation for the next four nights.

Your World experiences leave this morning in your hands. Perhaps begin the morning on a 4WD adventure through Norfolk Island National Park, where the gum forest and famous Norfolk Pines blanket the area in green. Alternatively, discover the island's rich history with a guided tour through the historic Pitcairn Settlers Village.

We then stop in at Hilli Restaurant for lunch. With our tastebuds tantalised by a meal of fresh produce, we proceed to a local distillery, where we are invited to sample some of its flavoursome liqueurs. At a nearby clifftop property, we become acquainted with some of Farmer Lou's innovative farming practises, before continuing on to Mootineers Cheese Farm. Here, we indulge in some of its finest offerings, while also learning about sea salt production.

Dinner is a private affair of traditional, local Norfolk dishes. As evening settles, we learn about Norfolk Island's great untold story of the Bounty mutineers.

At Norfolk Island Museum, we gain insight into the island’s multi-layered past. It’s then onto World Heritage-listed Kingston for a further dose of history. Although Polynesian settlement here predates the arrival of Captain Cook by several hundred years, this region is perhaps best known for once being one of the British Empire’s most brutal penal settlements. Take your pick of where to dine this evening.

We begin the morning on a quest to discover the Norfolk Island of today with a guided tour of its sustainable practises. This is a real behind-the-scenes look at the workings of this self-sustaining island, an insight not many visitors are privy to. Afterwards, enjoy unique perspectives of the area’s stunning coral and sea life from aboard a glass-bottom boat.

After taking time out for lunch, we take a tour of Australian author Colleen McCullough’s eclectic home. It’s then on to a place where art and history collide at Cyclorama, a 360˚ panoramic painting depicting the history of the Norfolk people. In celebration of our time here, our Farewell Dinner is set atop the island’s cliffs at Forrester Court.

Following breakfast, it's back aboard our private jet for the return journey home.
