Retracing Norse Lore in Modern Europe 2019 map - Land only

Bound for the profound beauty of Norway’s fjords, we first alight in Hamburg for a day of discovery. Here we uncover nautical history, sample Die Bank Restaurant’s chic Michelin-starred menu and stay at the resplendent Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten on the shores of Inner Alster Lake. The perfect inauguration to boarding our ship, the Europa 2, for northerly seafaring adventures.

The Kiel Canal bisects the top tip of Germany, linking the North Sea with the Baltic, and it’s here that we cruise towards Copenhagen. Arriving in Denmark’s capital, choose from two Your World experiences, to either explore the highlights of Rosenborg Castle with our Danish expert or visit the traditional village of Dragør after touring Copenhagen. Then, buoyed by fresh experiences, it’s time to take to the seas again, as we head for Sweden.

In Stockholm, Your World experiences invite us on a two-part discovery of Sweden’s capital. First, either tour Scandinavia’s most visited museum, dedicated to the 17th-century Vasa ship, or enjoy some retail therapy, accompanied by a personal shopper in the Stockholm Fashion District. Then, perhaps join a private cruise along the Djurgården canal to view Stockholm’s skyline or live the legend of ABBA at the museum devoted to the fantastic four.

As Tallinn’s turreted skyline silhouettes our horizon, we choose to walk through the city’s historic heart on a tour or enjoy a la carte dining on a gourmet excursion. Intrigued by what we’ll later find on Finland’s shores – a visit to the ancient town of Porvoo or a gourmet journey along Helsinki’s Tram Route 6, which etches in our memory the city’s culinary and design landscape.

Alighting in St Petersburg, it’s time to discover Russia’s ‘Venice of the East’ as we beat the crowds to the Hermitage Museum followed by a guide tour of Peter and Paul Fortress and St Isaac’s Cathedral. VIP seats at the Mariinsky Theatre offer a glamourous interlude. Then Your World experiences round off our Russian sojourn, transporting us to the regal setting of Catherine Palace or through the city’s canals by hydrofoil to Peterhof Palace.

Welcome the gentle waters of the Baltic Sea and recharge our batteries before our next port of call in the Lithuanian city of Klaipeda. From its enchanting old town, Your World experiences offer a gentle cycle to Curonian Spit National Park. The alternative is a more extensive discovery of the park with a visit to the Hill of Witches sculpture trail and a ferry ride to explore the natural phenomenon of the Dead Dunes.

On the island of Bornholm, today’s exploration takes on a culinary theme as we taste local delicacies with stops at the island’s famous smokehouses. Then a day on board our cruise ship sees us travelling in the opposite direction as we take in the sights of the Kiel Canal once again.

After a day on the water, the city of Vikings welcomes us. Your World Experiences will guide us through Oslo. Perhaps take a cultural tour of the sculptures of Vigeland Park, the Viking Ship Museum and stop at Holmenkollen ski jump. For a more general overview, enjoy a half-day exploration of Oslo before soaking up the maritime vibe of the Bygdøy peninsula. We then edge along Norway’s west coast with another day at sea.

It’s time to traverse Norway’s fjord country. Aboard the Flåmsbana, one of the world’s steepest train lines, we travel from ocean level near Sognefjord in Flåm to the summit at Myrdal mountain station. In Ålesund, we step ashore to explore the Art Nouveau Centre & The Art Museum KUBE before sailing for Giske, Godøy and Vigra islands, to follow in the footsteps of earls, kings and Viking chiefs. Then a day at sea finds us cruising further north.

Entering the Arctic Circle, we cast out amid the Lofoten archipelago, reaching the town of Svolvær to relive Viking tradition over lunch in a longhouse. Your World experiences tempt us to learn more of Norse lore in the city of Leknes with a visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum and the fishing village of Ballstad or a journey south to witness history in Nordland country. Another day at sea then prefaces our next cluster of Nordic adventures.

Between mountains, the village of Hellesylt is the starting point for our journey to Geiranger. We wind along a mountain road aniticipating the moment when Norway’s most famous fjord, Geirangerfjord, is unveiled before us. In Bergen, a city tour precedes a ride on the Bergen Express train. Then back in town, we embark on a Your World experience aboard a helicopter to see the velvety green cliffs of Hardangerfjord tumble into crystal waters.

Our final day on board unfolds on the water. Cherish time to unwind as you’re cocooned in the comforts of your ship. Our journey has come full circle. We farewell our ship on arrival in Hamburg and are whisked to the airport for our onward flight.
