Land Only Map Rwanda Extension 2021

From Nairobi, we arrive in Rwanda’s largest city. Spread across several hills and valleys, Kigali is a lush contrast to Africa’s plains with flowering trees, boulevards and verdant hillsides. Upon touching down we are taken to our hotel. Dreams of the adventure ahead have us retire early.

Our morning is spent paying our respect to the 250,000 victims of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and Museum. It is then onwards to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in Volcanoes National Park. Nestled at the foothills of the Virungas, we will spend two nights in the heart of mountain gorilla territory, surrounded by soaring volcanoes and misty forest.

The chance to see the rare and endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is something only a privileged few experience. We begin our trek early, while a heavy blanket of mist still shrouds the forest. As this is essentially a safari, sightings are never guaranteed, however, Volcanoes National Park offers us the highest rate of success. Treks can often be long and arduous, as gorillas are free to roam across this wide expanse of forest. A good level of fitness is required.

Our time with the majestic gorillas has come to an end. Following a languid morning, we are taken to the airport for our onward flight.
