21 Days Ocean Voyages

Much of this journey takes place aboard EUROPA 2, a ship that presents the highest level of casual luxury available today. At the same time, it leaves nothing to be desired in terms of lavishness and amenities, as evidenced by the fact that the Berlitz Cruise Guide 2019 awarded it the highest distinction: five-stars-plus for the sixth year in a row.

On arrival in Hamburg, we look forward to opening the doors to our expansive room at the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Our day begins a little later than usual, with time for a sleep in before a Welcome Brunch at our hotel. We head to the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, located adjacent to the site of the former camp which today is a cemetery with numerous graves and monuments.

The history of Hamburg is on display as we explore the Elbe Tunnel and Hamburg Town Hall. By train, we rumble beneath the streets to reach HafenCity Universität, a subway station illuminated by coloured LED light installations floating above the platform. We then step aboard our ship. Our first day of sailing sees us in a northerly direction. Travelling to Norway, this is the perfect time to utilise our ship’s extraordinary facilities.

After riding the Fløibanen funicular, choose to visit World Heritage-listed Bryggen or spend time exploring Bergen at your own pace. Our ship then arrives in the port of Flåm. Travel on the Flåmsbana, one of the world’s steepest train lines or enjoy a hike through the lush Flåm Valley. We then come to World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord; the sun peeking over mountains dusted with snow. Further along, we float up to the Seven Sisters waterfalls.

On the edge of a fjord sits Trondheim. We explore on foot, before Nidaros Cathedral hosts us for a private organ recital. Our ship then arrives near Svartisen glacier. Free of plans, we soak up the scenery at our leisure. Leknes is set among dramatic mountains, their reflection seen in the glassy waters as we drift ashore. Choose to visit the home of a glass blower and a wool farm or stretch your legs on an easy hike to the top of Justadtinden.

We continue cruising south before arriving in the city of Åndalsnes, nestled between mountains and fjords. Explore the town or take a drive along the Norwegian Scenic Route to Trollstigen. We are then led along the lanes of Old Stavanger, where 18th-century wooden homes gleam white and tousled flowers flow from hanging baskets. In Kristiansand, local World War II history is recounted at the Arkivet Peace and Human Rights Centre.

We disembark in Oslo and visit the Viking Ship Museum, the opera house and the Kon-Tiki Museum. Sample the innovative meals at Maaemo, the first Scandinavian restaurant to be awarded three Michelin stars. Among the 200,000 islands dotting the waters of Sweden, we take a moment in Marstrand, before transferring to the mainland and Gothenburg. Step out for a guided discovery before sitting down to dinner at the Riverton Skybar & Restaurant.

In Stockholm, we take in sights like City Hall. Dinner is at Stadshuskällaren, offering all of the menus served during the annual Nobel banquet since 1901. A short cruise from our hotel, the residence of the Swedish royal family awaits. Later, during lunch at Rosendals Garden, we enjoy a harvest of vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruits direct from the greenhouse. Visit the Vasa museum or take an interactive journey at ABBA The Museum.

Arriving in Copenhagen, our Danish expert brings the city to life, a trip to the Viking city of Roskilde one of many highlights. After exploring the Viking Ship Museum, choose to cruise on a reconstructed Viking warship. Visit Frederiksborg Castle, then continue on to Helsingør and Kronborg Castle, before returning to Copenhagen along the coastal road. We toast our travels with dinner and drinks at the restaurant within Christiansborg Palace.
