A tradition going back thousands of years in Kazakhstan, falconry is today practiced by a relative few. At Sunkar Falconry Center, just outside Almaty, we witness this ancient custom, as powerful raptors are put through their paces during a captivating performance. 

The Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum invites us in for an exclusive after-hours visit. The exquisite domed building houses the tomb of Tamerlane, the Turco-Mongol conqueror also known as Timur. The striking structure is said to be the architectural ancestor of the Taj Mahal, and we marvel at its symmetry and opulence.
