An Epicurean Journey In Northern Italy 2019 Map

Itinerary

Where butter is expected in the place of olive oil, and buckwheat replaces your standard slice of bread, the northern reaches of Italy offer a profound taste of regional distinctions ready for our discovery. Upon arriving in Venice, private boats whisk us along the canals to our hotel, Splendid Venice, and we toast to our journey with cocktails upon the roof. Our discovery of the city unfolds on foot and aboard a gondola, including dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant of Venissa Wine Resort.

At La Fenice Opera House, a private aperitif accompanies a wander through the theatre. We then drive to Capriva del Friuli and check in to a medieval winery and estate. One day is spent in the nearby ancient Roman city of Aquileia, with lunch on the coast in Grado before tasting the famous ham of Cormòns. The next is devoted to the cuisine of the region, learning how to cook Friulian dishes and enjoying a rustic meal amid rows of vines.

We make a pit stop in both Portobuffolè and Sacile, before arriving in Cison di Valmarino. Villa Abbazia sweeps us up in a warm Italian embrace with dinner at its Michelin-starred restaurant. A local pastry shop in Treviso invites us to make, and sample tiramisu, followed by a independent exploration of the museum at Villa di Maser. Amid the hills surrounding Conegliano, we also visit Italy’s renowned prosecco region.

A slight detour leads us to Padua, a town known for its extraordinary frescoes. In Verona, we make a home for ourselves in the old part of town at Palazzo Victoria. Join lovelorn tourists and locals on the streets before a string quartet performs for us at the Palazzo Verità-Poeta. We also taste our way through the Valpolicella Wine Region, one glass of Amarone at a time, and continue indulging with dinner at Palazzo Victoria’s Borsari 36.

Nestled within the Adige River Valley, sights of medieval frescos and a baroque chapel come into view in Trento. Continue to Bolzano, a town wrapped in vineyards, where we visit Franz Haas Winery and a traditional farmhouse. Further afield, we stroll through Brixen and visit the sprawling property of Marchesi Gonzaga, shadowed by the Dolomites.

We enjoy lunch at the vineyards of Tenuta San Leonardo before surrendering to Lido Palace at Lake Garda. Skirting the dazzling shores of the lake, we explore Sirmione, entering through Scaliger Castle which protected the town for many centuries. The day then takes us to Desenzano del Garda.

We head into golden vineyards of the Franciacorta wine region, a producer of some of the world’s finest sparkling wines. Some of our most sublime days are then spent at Grand Hotel Tremezzo, virtually lapped by the waters of Lake Como. On a cruise across the lake, we pause at Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbianello and Villa Melzi. Catch a funicular to Brunate and hike across the lush landscape to Torno, a rare lakeside medieval village.

The Bulgari Hotel greets us on arrival in Milan. You’re in the fashion capital of the world, you won’t want to pass up the chance to be chaperoned through the streets with a personal shopper on a Your World experience. Depart Milan this morning, the taste of Italy still lingering on our lips.
