The Kimberley with True North

Itinerary

Our journey begins at Broome’s Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa, named after the iconic sands on its doorstep. Learn about the city’s pearling history and stop at a favourite local haunt, Matso’s Brewery, where lunch goes perfectly with its unique mango, lychee or chilli beer. All of this before boarding True North and sailing into the sunset with an icy drink in hand.

There are two major Kimberley highlights on the horizon. First, we sail right up to Horizontal Falls (a feat most other ships are unable to achieve) before transferring to a high-powered boat for a ride through the sideways rapids. Next, after a number of opportunities to fish for barramundi, is Montgomery Reef. We stay put here in the open ocean simply watching as 400 square kilometers of reef emerges around us as if by magic.

After a slow cruise along the Prince Regent River, our ship anchors under Kings Cascades so we can stand on the bow and shower beneath its waters. Dry off, momentarily, with a steady hike to the top of the falls where we’ll no doubt want to dive into the freshwater pool. At the Hunter River, we might head to Jackson Falls, learn how to catch mud crabs or go fishing before drinks with our feet in the sand at Naturaliste Island.

We discover the amazing Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art under the shade of ledges and cliffs at the Mitchell River and cruise along the King George River. With our ship anchored just meters in front of King George Falls, we enjoy privileged views of the remote twin falls, only accessible by ship or helicopter. Some of us might like to climb to the top of the falls for another perspective on the area before cruising onwards to Tranquil Bay.

At Wyndham, we drive to Kununurra to board a chartered flight direct to Bullo River Station, a working cattle station set on half-a-million acres. Our plane touches down on the lawns of the original homestead, now a guest house, which will be our base for the next three nights. From here, we will set of on excursions of our choosing. Spend a day on the land cattle mustering, or out on heli-fishing adventure. View ancient Aboriginal rock art sites or view the landscapes from a stock horse.

Our chartered plane takes us into Purnululu National Park, flying low so we can admire the the Bungle Bungle Range as well as the Argyle Diamond Mine. We land close to the range for a walk to Cathedral Gorge, then head to the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge where dinner and drinks are servered under the stars. Our exploration the next day includes a walk to Echidna Chasm, a bush tucker foraging walk with local guides and sunset drinks overlooking the range.

We board our chartered plane and fly back to Kununurra, then meet another flight to Darwin. After checking in to the Hilton Darwin, we step out to discover the tropical city’s streets and later head to one of our favourite spots for our last dinner. At Pee Wee’s on the point, we enjoy excellent local food with views to the ocean. The following day, our journey comes to an end.
